Things to do in Florida January 18, 19, 20, 2013

It's a colorful weekend of Things to do in Florida January 18, 19, 20, 2013 starting in Jacksonville where the inimitable Peter Max is set to unveil his new Masters Series Exhibition. Here's your chance to meet the Legendary artist who's work gave visual expression to the soul of a generation and an opportunity to experience some of his latest creations. And that as they say, is just a dab of paint on the old canvas. Well really nobody says that but there WILL be art shows going on all the way to Miami where it's ART DECO WEEKEND in Miami Beach! Don't miss this celebration of the art deco era in Florida being showcased in every form from fashion and movies to an art deco parade! The 62nd Annual Beaux Arts' Festival of Art will also be going on in Miami January 19th - 20th so it should truly be a color fest down there. Switching gears, there are some other things to do in Florida January 18, 19, 20, 2013 offering color of a different hue. Yes boys and girls - it's the Advance Auto Parts MONSTER MONSTER MONSTER JAM!!! Actually it's just the one MONSTER, but there will be many trucks all MONSTER SIZED and they will all be in Tampa Jan 19th. Plenty of car shows this weekend too but WHAT ABOUT THE FOOD! Well you will find a Key Lime Pie Festival, a Festival of Chocolate, the Florida Keys Seafood Festival and a Murder at the Howard Johnson’s. Great buffet though. And they are all right here on this week's list of things to do in Florida January 18, 19, 20, 2013. Pack some Alka-Seltzer.

No More Monkey Business in NASCAR

The 'No More Monkey Business in NASCAR' isn't a reprimand concerning some new questionable goings on in the world of stock car racing, but rather a reminder of the sport's questionable but highly entertaining antics of the past. Who can imagine in this day and age, a professional race car driver streaking around the track with his pet monkey going along for the ride, yet it really did happen and was all just part of the show back in the early part of the 1950s. The likes of Tim Flock and his hairy pal, "Jocko Flocko" who lasted at least part of that race with his heavy footed owner may never be seen again, but will always be a part of NASCAR's colorful and complex story. Though NASCAR's birth certificate may show Daytona Beach, FL in February of 1948 as the place and time of its beginning, the roots of NASCAR go back much further - back to to the southern Piedmont where young men raced a very different kind of track that deservedly came to be called 'Thunder Road'. Fast, exciting and dangerous in the extreme, Thunder Road was a "speedway" for hauling illegal alcohol - homeschooling for many drivers in stock car's early days. It was also seen by some as the only road out of poverty as these future racing stars carried that wildness and daring with them from the wrong side of the tracks to the racetracks. If anything, NASCAR is a success story filled with as much comedy and drama as any playwright could hope for. The characters are also the stuff of legend beginning with its founder, William "Big Bill" France, a driver himself along with a cast ranging from preachers to politicians. And as for NASCAR's legion of loyal fans, over the years they have ranged from the famous to the infamous. With corporate sponsorships and far better safety regulations, NASCAR's image today is far different than the one it had when Tim Flock took that monkey for the ride of his life back in 1953, but one can't help but feel a twinge
of envy for those at the track that day when there was lot less money in the pocket and a little more monkey business in NASCAR.

When looking for things to do in Florida March 25, 26, 27, 2011 you may want to check out one of Florida's many weekend car shows. With cars playing such a major role in our lives, we all share a connection with them making car shows one of the most popular events with everyone from Grandma to the Hot Wheels set. Even if you're more into craft shows than chrome, you have to admit, the automobile is a genuine work of art with a past that will keep any history buff fascinated while stirring a big frothy cup of nostalgia for those of us who still remember what a clutch is. And for aficionados that have an ongoing love affair with these remarkable machines,... well they're already searching the list for the next big show. By the way, if you can't find a particular car show in this list of things to do in Florida March 25, 26, 27, 2011 or any future list posted each week on Florahome USA, you'll always find a link to more car shows included near the bottom of the list. A second event you may want to consider this weekend is one of Florida's county fairs. Here again is another rare place where both young and old can meet and actually have a good time. From clowns to cows, the county fair is blue ribbon Americana with rides, ring toss and red candied apples on a stick. As always though, these two events are only a couple of slices from the big apple pie of fun awaiting you this week in Florida. It's the beginning of Spring with a whole new list of things to do in Florida March 25, 26, 27, 2011. Enjoy!

Florida Car Museums

Daytona Beach, FL in the 1920s

Florida car museums like Florida itself demonstrate a wonderful diversity providing a window into the state's own unique automobiling past. Little did that mysterious Creek Indian called Grey Eyes know when he aided in the construction of the first roadway into Florida, Old Kings Road, that something called an automobile would some day follow that same path by the million under more horsepower than he could possibly imagine. Though it's true, Florida is far from unique in it's love affair with the car, the state's subtropical allure has kept it's highways humming with 'tin can tourists' and those who never went home again all the way to the present. It's also true, as it is with just about every invention mankind has come up with, competition is all part of the game and whether how big, how beautiful or how fast it can go (as they try to prove in Daytona each year), cars meet all the requirements for showing off. From the Luxurious Packard exhibited at the Ft. Lauderdale Antique Car Museum to Don Garlit's Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, you'll see a good deal of that 'showing off' at Florida car museums. And for those who just love old cars restored to their original glory, you will find the Classic Car Museum in Sarasota, FL. is still one of the best. Here are a few more,...
