Things to do in Florida July 29, 30, 31, 2011

This list of things to do in Florida July 29, 30, 31, 2011 picks up where the last one left off  (no, you're not outta the woods yet Scarecrow). This week however, you're invited to join Dorothy Gail and that "menace to society" Toto as they take the stage at the Lakeland Community Theatre in Lakeland Florida. To get in you have your choice of regular admission or you can just bring them the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West. (Please don't do that) Another tale familiar to kids young and old is the one about a young boy named Charles Bucket better known as Charlie who's golden ticket and heart of the same color wins big in 'Willy Wonka' playing this weekend at the Pensacola Little Theatre. You have your choice of regular admission or you can just show them your golden ticket. (Please don't do that) Kid fun is apparently the theme this weekend starting with a Crackerjack box of baseball games to enjoy. There's also a Barbie doll collectors convention and a couple of new big kid toys to play with on this Wonka list of things to do in Florida July 29, 30, 31, 2011. The Cypress Canopy Cycle now at Forever Florida takes you where no cyclist has been before (at least not intentionally) lifting you high up in the trees for a bird's eye view of their 4700 acre "eco-ranch". Then down in Key West Florida, there's 'Jetpack Adventures' for a bit of high-tech water fun. Though basically portrayed as a sort of James Bond device, for those of the Super Ball / Frisbee generation, it's of course instantly recognized as a ginormous Water Wiggle. Still,... it's got to be a whole lot of fun - it's by WHAM-O!

Melrose, Florida

The Lake Santa Fe community of Melrose, Florida is only about 11 0r 12 miles from Florahome and rests in no less than four different counties including Alachua, Bradford, Clay and our own Putnam County. Originally called Shake Rag for the rag shaking signal used to start many a horse race back in the early days, 'Melrose' was eventually decided a more suitable replacement reflecting the resident's beginnings rather than the race's. Today, Melrose, Florida continues making improvements while remembering its past offering one of the nicest places in the area to visit or to live.


Where is Melrose,  Florida:

The first map shows Melrose about 20 miles or so east of Gainesville with the second map indicating how to get to Melrose from Florahome. Just head west on Florida State Road 100, and make a left at 26 when you get to Putnam Hall. It'll take you straight to Melrose. Pretty simple.

Surprise! It's the Christmas list of things to do in Florida July 22, 23, 24, 2011. Well okay, it's Christmas in July but still,... with all the gloomy news out there, we could all probably use a little Christmas just this very minute, and Sebring, Florida is bringing it by the sack full to Kenilworth Lodge July 22nd and 23rd. Sebring is not alone either, also spreading the good cheer a little early this year, Penny University is having its 'Caribbean Christmas in July' at St Mary Magdalen Church in Altamonte Springs. Who says snow and flip flops don't mix? And as you probably already know, it's always Christmas in one special spot in Orange County, FL - Christmas, Florida. Famous for answering tons of letters with their Christmas postmark, there's a lot more to the place than just answering mail - like the Jungle Adventures Nature Park where you'll get an up-close and personal view of Florida's wildlife. Just look for Swampy, the World's Largest (200 ft) Alligator. YIKES! You can also take a step back in time and explore Florida's past at Fort Christmas in Christmas, FL - a rare glimpse of the state you won't see at Disney World, but close enough to the Mouse House for fairly short side trip. And for those who think it's just too early for reindeer on rooftops and eggnog, there are a few other things to do in Florida July 22, 23, 24, 2011 just as fun and though sometimes hard to find these days, many of them family friendly as well. Willy Wonka's playing at the Alhambra in Jacksonville, and in Tampa on the 22nd, you've got Seussical the Musical, Jr. at the Stratz, a laugh HARD-ee take on the good Doctor where kids themselves get in on the act. Then there's a very affordable date with the kids at the 'SING-ALONG WIZARD OF OZ!'- part of the Summer Classics event now going on at the Florida Theatre in Tampa. As a matter of fact, why don't we just get those lazy vocal chords in shape right now. Oh come on you ccccoward, stand up and sing - you know the words. Weeeeeee're. Come on LOUDER! WEEEEEEEEE'RE -

Interlachen, Florida

It's probably more accurate to describe Interlachen, Florida as a cousin than a neighbor. That's especially true for those who have grown up here in Florahome and gotten a good deal of their formal education in Interlachen. But even for those who have lived in Florahome only a short time, it's soon apparent - the common experiences these two communities have shared beginning even before the first railroad tracks were laid in the late 1800s, a bond was formed that can be felt to this day. As the photo at the top of this post clearly demonstrates, the Interlachen community hasn't forgotten its history and as it continues to work toward its preservation Florahome residents may in turn gain a better understanding of their own history.

Where is Interlachen Florida?

Though situated between Jacksonville and Orlando, the name Interlachen actually means 'between the lakes'. The next maps show first how to get there from Florahome and the second conveys how the place got its name.

Heading west on Florida State Road 100 from Florahome, make a left when you get to Grandin onto County Rd 315 and keep heading south.

If you click on the above map you'll see two lakes - Lake Chipco and Lake Lagonda and the historic part of town between them. Interlachen is also between two other cities - Gainesville to the west and Palatka to the east as the arrows indicate. The last map is a closer view of the town between the lakes and Interlachen Hall pictured at the top of this post, where the community has been meeting since 1892.

LeakyCon tops the list of things to do in Florida July 15, 16, 17, 2011. According to some reports, this Orlando based event set to coincide with the last movie in the Harry Potter series could be even bigger than the Sopchoppy Opry. It's that big. It's also a bit sad having to say farewell to Harry and his chums while watching the final shuttle mission take place at the same time, but like the tribute being payed to country music legends, George Jones and Tammy Wynette in Sopchoppy, the things that effect us most and those that move us deeply never really leave us. Things to do in Florida July 8, 9, 10, 2011

Got the post fireworks blues? Cheer up! There are still lots of fun things to do in Florida July 8, 9, 10, 2011. For example, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast as well as some merry folk in the Port Charlotte area have decided to beat the summer blues with 'Christmas in July'. That may be a bit early for some, but if you think you need a little Christmas just this very minute, just hitch up the old sleigh and head on over. Music is another way to escape those summer doldrums and for Jacksonville Beach, that means the 'Cool Sounds of Hot Summer Nights' - a part of the Summer Jazz Concert Series at the Sea Walk Pavilion. For some people, it may take something really different to shake them out of their dog days gloom, and one of the most unusual on this week's list of things to do in Florida July 8, 9, 10, 2011 is the 27th Annual Underwater Music Festival in the Florida Keys. It's not for everybody, but it's definitely different. Speaking of different, one of the most unique entertainers alive will be in Tampa July 9th - THE AMAZING KRESKIN! That word, 'amazing' gets a lot of play these days, but Kreskin really can't be described any other way. Many have seen the 'Mentalist' on TV, but rarely does one get the chance to see the real deal up close and personal. This is your chance Tampa. As a matter of fact, Kreskin could probably tell you exactly what kind of things you'll be wanting to do in Florida this July 8, 9, 10, 2011. But then again,... why spoil the surprise?
