Gold Head Photos - Yesterday Festival

Gold Head State Park - Florida

Here are a few photos of the Yesterday Festival at Gold Head State Park 2011 for those who missed it or maybe just forgot to bring along a camera. The Yesterday Festival is undeniable proof that education really can be fun!  Also, a special note of thanks to all those who made this year's Yesterday Festival at Gold Head a day to remember. Gold Head State Park has been creating happy memories for Floridians and visitors to the state of Florida for years and has always been a great asset to the Keystone Heights area. Hopefully these photos of The Yesterday Festival and of Gold Head will help bring back even more.

William Bartram - the Florida Indians

Paynes Prairie

In 1770, the English botanist William Bartram gave one of the most intriguing accounts we have of the Florida Indian or more specifically the Native Amercan's we now think of as Florida's indians - the Seminoles. With that account being recorded only a short distance from Florahome in the area of present day Micanopy and with the Seminoles also at that time raising cattle even a bit closer at Paynes Prairie, it seems a fitting place to continue the history of Native Americans in Florida. William Bartram's visit came in an unusual period of Florida history exploring the state under the flag of England. Florida had been Spanish ruled for generations and would continue to be fought over by Spain, England and finally the United States with Indians both native to Florida and the Seminoles who were not, caught in the middle. After 3 Seminole wars and the loss or 'removal' of Florida's Native American population, only a small defiant remnant of less than 300 Seminoles remained in the southernmost regions of Florida. From those last few survivors the Seminole Indians of Florida have established a remarkable and enduring place in the state's history. It was in that earlier time of William Bartram however, that those Creek Indians who came to be called Seminole or 'wild ones' for leaving their native Georgia for the wild's of Florida really began to form their unique identity that continues to evolve in the modern world. Even the newly acquired nickname 'Cowcatcher' given to the Seminole chief Bartram met along the edge of present day Tuscawilla Lake illustrates how the Seminole Indians were becoming increasingly more skilled at raising horses and cattle. Cowcatcher was also known for his great leadership ability which has perhaps been the key factor in preserving the Seminole people and their culture over the years - through the continued wise council of tribal leaders. Also, from the time of William Bartram, the ability of the Seminole Indians to adapt under the most challenging conditions imaginable has proved to be one of their greatest strengths and even though the Seminoles are no less indidualistic than any other group, native American or otherwise, they share a history that is unique among Native Americans and Floridians alike and is a story that has continued to unfold from William Bartram's time to the present. With Florahome USA's original post on the Timucua being one of the most viewed to date, it shows the level of fascination people have with the Native American Indian hasn't deminished. It must be remembered however, historical accounts are often skewed in favor of the authors own personal views. It also must be taken into account the times in which those events took place. In the case of the Seminoles of William Bartram's time, they had already seen their way of life changed dramatically by the white man only compounding conflicts already existing before the strangers arrived. Also, with most of us of us scarcely able to imagine life without a cell phone let alone comprehending a Florida considered to be primitive even by the standards of Bartram's day, we need to be careful when judging the acts of those living then when they appear at times to be somewhat brutal. It was a brutal time of war and conquest in a primitive world. The truth is, we can never know without having lived through those times and under those same conditions ourselves how we would have done. All that being said, history still stirs the imagination and gives us a better understanding of our past reminding us that we are all connected to it and are a part of that ongoing story.

The Florida Cowboy - Desoto to Six Gun Territory

Amazingly, even Six Gun Territory never really gave the Florida cowboy his due. From the days of Juan Ponce and Hernando Desoto when the first horses set foot on the sandy beaches of Florida, a real legacy of adventure and toil began in this state that continues even to this day. Spanish cattle as well were the first to be established among the scrub oak and palmettos of Florida with the quality of their breeding like that of the horse, being respected now as it was then. And as for the Florida cowboy himself, or 'cowman' as they're more freqently called here than out west, their legacy is every bit as wild and romantic as their western counterpart although mysteriously overlooked by most writers, movie producers and yes even our own favorite pre-Disney World cowboy themed park - Six Gun Territory Really though, even those old gunfights we enjoyed so much at Six Gun were not unknown in Florida back when the Ashley Gang came ridin' into town. Indians as well were as much a part of the Florida frontier as out west with their continued presence in the state today a testament to their courage and defiance through the most costly U.S. campaign ever waged against Native Americans. They too share a history with those men and women who have made a living in Florida from the business of riding horses and raising cattle and though for a time the Seminoles were stripped of that heritage, they have now reclaimed it and are as strong in the cattle industry in Florida as ever. The history of the Florida Cowman is also unique in that they not only shared many of the same hardships and challenges endured by the western cowboy such as cattle rustling and other types of rattlesnakes but also the rough Florida landscape with its swamps, mosqitoes and even the occasional hurricane. Until only recently, even the western cowboy no longer stirred the imagination the way it once had with the final shootout at Six Gun Territory not just the loss of a small theme park to a giant one, but more the theme itself being played out like an old Colorado mine. It's been a good while since those westerns being cranked out by the dozen were made though, and with True Grit currently in theaters, perhaps a new interest in the American cowboy will emerge. If it does, maybe this time Hollywood will turn an eye toward Florida and the rough and rowdy southern cracker will finally get his crack at 3D TV. Hold on to your Florida cowboy whips folks, 'cause Six Gun Territory may just be fixin' to rise again! (Desoto didn't know when to quit either did he).

Things to do in Florida Jan 21, 22, 23, 2011

Update:
you can find the latest 'Things to do in Florida list' shown either just to the right of the post title or scroll down to the archive also on the right-hand side of the page.

_______________________

There are tons of things to do in Florida for Jan. 21, 22, and 23, 2011 and they're all listed here! Well not quite, but hopefully enough to keep you actively entertained all weekend. Active is the key word with events like the Matanzas 5k Fun Run in St. Augustine close enough to Florahome that we have no excuse but to lace up the ole Nikes and get movin'. Note that the 'Fun Run' has been listed just after the St. Augustine Chocolate Tour which we will most likely be hitting first. Also, an active race season is heating up in Daytona with the NASCAR Preseason Thunder Fan Fest so don't miss that one. Of course when you're talking Florida, you're talking about a diverse population with millions of tourists only adding to the broad range of interests. Clearly that diversity is reflected here with things to do for art and music lovers alike whether you're into Mozart or Merle Haggard. Those leaning more toward Mozart please note the offerings by our youth and lend your support to keep the arts alive in Florida for years to come. And by the way, the recent Kennedy Center Honoree, Merle Haggard will be here in Florida from Jan 27th until Feb 3rd so get your tickets early. Also Roy Clark will be performing at Silver Springs this coming Saurday, Jan 22nd so don't Hee Haw around and miss him. Enough already - there are enough things to do in Florida Jan 21, 22, and 23, 2011 to keep everyone actively happy - so get out there and have some fun!

A Place Called George's Lake

The problem with searching the web for information on George's Lake or even Florahome, Florida is the same problem many people today see with all of our advanced technology - real world disconnectedness. If you just want the basic facts, the internet's a great place to get them, but in the case of Georges Lake, a dry list of facts seems a poor representation of a place so rich with memories. For some, those memories go back a long way filled with the sound of laughing kids, the smell of barbeque, or fishing 101 as taught by Grandad. Maybe some may even recall a family by the name of George swimming in the lake,... hmmmm? And oh yeah, by the way - this is George's Lake we're talking about, not Lake George - that's another Lake here in Florida and a whole nuther story. Like Florahome, George's Lake holds more memories than the lake holds fish and like these old photos,...

even though the memories may have faded a little, they are, for we who have them, a place called George's Lake.

The New Bulletin Board in Florahome, Florida

If you haven't checked out the Florahome, Florida Bulletin Board page on Florahome USA you may not only be missing out on what's going on in the area, but also the opportunity to advertise your yard sale, church event or practically anything else you'd like others to know about quickly and easily. While not meant to replace a good old tried and true sign like the ones at the corner of FL State Road 100 and Coral Farms Road, those signs are unfortunately not always easy to read. By also posting your message on the Florahome USA Bulletin Board, that message can be easily accessed and even added to with more details or photos making whatever you want to say crystal clear. You will also be able to reach not only Florahome, but Interlachen, Melrose, Palatka, the rest of Putnam County, Keystone Heights in Clay County, other communities in Florida and even beyond. The Bulletin Board page can also be used to alert the community about a lost dog, a lost cat or even a missing child. If you have a house to rent or need a place to advertise your skills or small business, Florahome USA has both the Bulletin Board page and a Business page. The ways the Bulletin Board page can be used are many and are currently available free of charge to all Florahome USA visitors in Florida and elsewhere. With your continued support and contributions it can stay that way. If you have already visited Florahome USA's Bulletin Board page and agree that it's a worthwhile contribution to the Florahome community, please let others know (this effort cannot work without your help). Once again, thanks to all who have visited the Bulletin Board page and other pages on Florahome USA in Florahome, Florida.

Click HERE to view the Bulletin Board Page or the link always at the top of Florahome USA.

Things to do in Florida Jan 7, 8, 9, 2011

Update:
you can find the latest 'Things to do in Florida list' shown either just to the right of the post title or scroll down to the archive also on the right-hand side of the page.

_______________________

This list of things to do in Florida for Jan 7, 8, and 9, 2011 has a little something for everyone - rather like Florida itself. From the time Juan Ponce de Leon first came ashore in 1513 somewhere in the Melbourne Beach vicinity, Florida has attracted travelers from the far corners creating a great cultural stew with new spices being added even to this day. Some of the events in this week's Things to do list explore the history of Florida demonstrating the changes brought about by those who came to this place determined to claim it as their own. Also noted in these living history lessons is just how much the land changed the people. Florida today is still seen as a pretty good deal offering both residents and visitors alike a lot more things to do than wade through swamps like Juan Ponce searching for the he Fountain of Youth (It's in St. Augustine by the way). So whether you're in the mood for Beethoven or a play, or you just want to pack up the kids and pitch a tent some place where the only sounds are the ones Ponce de Leon heard as he trekked through Florida's wilderness, you'll find those things to do in Florida and a lot more on this week's list. And yeah,... the Monster X Tour is on the list too.

Florida fire laws and safety tips

With a chance of rain in the forecast for much of North Florida tomorrow, Jan. 2, 2011 we may experience some relief from the dry weather, but conditions being as they are and with a burn ban already in effect for several counties in Florida, this would be a good time to make sure you and your family are informed about fire laws and safety especially pertaining to outdoor fires. The Florida Division of Forestry are the ones who administer Florida’s outdoor burning and forest fire laws and their website is an excellent source of information for all things fire related. Here is a link to their site. Indoor fires are also more common during the winter months and especially during and just after the holidays. The National Fire Protection Association is another great fire safety resource with fire prevention tips for this time of year, so pay them a visit as well and have a safe and happy new year.
