Things to do in Florida September 2, 3, 4, 5, 2011

This Labor Day Weekend list of Things to do in Florida September 2, 3, 4, 5, 2011 offers the weary laborer in Florida a variety of ways to take a break from the daily grind, but as many of you may have already heard, the choice of watching The Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon all day isn't one of them. Not only will there be no Jerry this year (no explanation given), but the show itself has been reduced to a 6 hour program on Sunday night. Maybe just another sign of times, but for the millions who are not gonna get the chance to say it, here's a sign for you Mr. Lewis.

As for the other things to do in Florida this September 2, 3, 4, 5, 2011 - the options range from watching a baseball or football game to attending the Labor Day Mud-A Palooza at the Redneck Yacht Club in Punta Gorda. For those who can't take the heat, (still a bit humid out there) there's Disney on Ice in Lakeland or how about the Miami Home Design and Remodeling Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The DUB SuperSeries Custom Auto Show is also set for September 3rd. Like the MDA Telethon, info for these Florida events can sometimes be scant, but a free Aaron Carter concert is suppose to be at the Eagle Ridge Mall in Lake Wales, FL on September 2nd. Other celebs making the 'Things to do in Florida list for September 2, 3, 4, 5, 2011 are - The Oak Ridge Boys (okay it's on the the 8th but still,..) Rick Springfield in Clearwater on the 3rd and American Idol star, Taylor Hicks will be on the Beach in Pensacola also on September 3rd. And don't miss the Florida Gospel Music Association Convention in Wimauma, FL if you're a southern gospel fan.

Where is Florida, New York?

Which one? Unless you're from New York, you may never have heard of any other place called Florida but the one attempting to dodge the hurricanes each year, but with hurricanes and other geographically challenged natural disasters wandering off course of late, those New Yorkers living in the Town of Florida or the Village of Florida, NY may be seriously rethinking the whole Florida theme. For a closer look at just where these two Floridas in New York are, let's go to the map.

Like Florahome, FL - both places are a fair distance from the coast and should not get the brunt of any storm making landfall in the area, but even inland, it's always best to be prepared. The following map is of the Warwick, NY Village of Florida (upper left-hand corner) located in Orange County, NY and though close enough to the Big Apple to enjoy, it's still far enough away to go back home and pick one.

Just up the road from Schenectady, the New York 'Town of Florida' in Montgomery County is even further inland and also like Florahome, may have a bit more in common with the agricultural part of the state than the city or the coast. By the way, if any of you guys up that way happen to read this, send us a postcard or photo - the one at the top of this post isn't fooling anybody.

At the moment, the latest hurricane to threaten Florida is a safe distance away but she may be paying us a visit by the weekend. Weather permitting however, there are plenty of things to do in Florida August 26, 27, 28, 2011 starting at the top of the list with a tribute to one of Florida's hero inventors, John Gorrie. Referred to by many as the father of refrigeration for being granted the first Patent for mechanical refrigeration in 1851, we all owe this man a debt of gratitude for every cube of ice and every cooled brow. The Water Street Festival of Ice will be honoring Apalachicola's own August 27th and should not only be educational, but a whole lot of fun. For the sports fan looking for things to do in Florida August 26, 27, 28, 2011 - baseball season is winding down now but doing so with style with clubs offering promotions ranging from free passes to live music, so get out to the park root! root! root! for the home team. And while on the subject of style, for those groovy, tie dyed flower children of the Woodstock generation who still put on their love beads and a Hendrix record occasionally (a what?), check out the Hippiefest Tour 2011 coming to a Florida coffee house near you. Art is alive and well in Florida and Florida art museums are a major reason why. No longer the stuffy mausoleums of the past, they are an interactive awakening of the senses. From the days our earliest ancestors began telling their story on canvas of stone, art has been used to express the human experience and that venture continues in Florida art museums today. Florida's art museums are an interactive playground for both young and old breaking the chains that bind the imagination providing a window into the mind and spirit. Art is also a means of communication and Florida art museums provide that connection with both the creative minds of the past as well as the child just learning to draw. As the recent PBS special featuring the gifted young opera sensation, Jackie Evancho proves, no place brings art in all its many forms together more beautifully than a museum and whether as grand and awe inspiring as the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, or just a humble neighborhood affair housing a few kindergarten masterpieces, its being in a place designed to turn us inside out allowing us to see the world in a way we never have before that makes them unique. That's what art has always done and is what Florida art museums are all about.

Here's a Slightly Stoopid list of things to do in Florida August 19, 20, 21 2011 (consistency is a virtue), and high on that list is some Slightly Stoopid music which can be heard at 3 locations (at least) on these same dates in the order of Cocoa Beach, Boca Raton and St. Augustine, FL. If for any reason you are unable to attend, please e-mail the Slightly Stoopid band members and let them know. Other performers we know and love visiting the state this weekend include Allison Krause and Union Station, Rascal Flatts, Tijuana Flats, B and G Flats and Brian McKnight. Okay let's get serious here. MONSTER JAM! - now that's some serious entertainment. Oh you lucky folks down there in Fort Lauderdale. Oh but wait! The award for the QUEEN MOTHER of serious entertaiment and a galley full of fun to boot must surely go to those whacky masters of the sea in Key Largo, FL sailing anything (and everything) that floats. And they do it with such poise and grace. Grace is the one trying to paddle with her foot.
